Site Credits & Acknowledgements
I have as yet contributed far too little original material to Burton studies; my efforts must begin by collecting and collating the vast piles of information that lie out there in dim library niches and dusty corners. I, and all Burton aficionados, owe a debt to those who have preserved Burton material, contributed to the body of understanding, and then generously made the fruits of their labors available to all.
- First and foremost acknowledgement is due Gavan Tredoux, whose massive Burtoniana.org site anticipated my public efforts by less than a year but has done more to further and enable Burton studies than any prior effort, on or off line, that I can bring to mind. Visitors there will find an all-but-complete collection of Burton's books and other published items, down to some of the rarest pamphlets and most obscure letters to journals.
- It was always the first intention of this long-delayed project to assemble and place online a complete collection of Burton's works, and I can only salute Gavan's efforts with something like weary relief — with that backbreaking task accomplished, we can all get on to the much more rewarding work of studying Burton. I reference Gavan's site and these materials throughout this site and cannot overstate my degree of indebtedness to him for saving me years of work and providing a sturdy foundation for all future Burton students and studies.
- Thanks to Richard Leveson, whose site was for many years the only published source of photos of the Burton mausoleum, especially its fascinating interior. Poring over those maddeningly intriguing photos was something that kept my interest in Burton burning bright over the long years while my efforts were set aside.
- My thanks to Richard as well for permission to use his 1996 and 2001 photos of the tomb here and in other works. They are utterly invaluable records of the tomb's contents and conditions in those eras.
